Why Simple Joys in Nature Matter (And How 30 Days of Micro-Journaling Can Bring You Peace, Presence, and Calm This Summer)

Summer has a way of sweeping us up. The longer days, the full calendars, the social energy — it can all feel like a rush of light and movement. And while I love this season, I’ve also learned I need little practices to help me slow down enough to feel it.

That’s what inspired my new printable:
June Simple Joys in Nature – 30 Days of Noticing

It’s a free, fridge-friendly challenge I created to help you gently engage your senses, reflect in just a word or two each day, and make space to savor summer’s magic. It is not meant to be another “to-do” on your list.

Because here’s the thing. The most powerful moments of peace often come in the smallest, simplest forms.

The Power of Simple Joys in a Fast-Paced Season

June marks a natural threshold. School ends, routines shift, and everything starts to move just a little faster. It’s beautiful, but it can also feel overwhelming. When the pace of life speeds up, our nervous systems can get stuck in “go” mode. We forget to pause. We forget to breathe.

That’s where simple joys come in.

Things like…

  • The warmth of sun on your skin
  • The sound of wind through leaves
  • The scent of wildflowers or cut grass
  • The quiet of dusk
  • The feeling of bare feet in soft grass

These tiny, sensory moments have the power to bring us back to ourselves. They anchor us in the present. They remind us we’re part of something much bigger and much steadier than our schedules and screens.

Micro-Journaling: A Daily Practice That Actually Feels Doable

I’ve experimented with lots of journaling styles over the years. Gratitude lists, morning pages, seasonal reflections. They’re all beautiful, but sometimes… they feel like a lot.

Especially in summer, when I want to spend less time inside and more time out in the world.

That’s why I started practicing something I call micro journaling.

It’s simple. Just notice one thing. One moment, one feeling, one sensory detail. Then write it down in one or two words. That’s it.

Here are a few real examples from my own recent micro-journaling:

  • Dandelion fuzz
  • Warm breeze
  • Sparrow song
  • Stillness
  • Bee hum
  • Lavender and sunlight

It’s not about writing something profound. It’s about showing up with curiosity. It’s about building a relationship with your inner world and the world around you, one tiny noticing at a time.

Nature, the Nervous System, and Why Slowing Down Matters

As a forest therapy guide and nature-based wellness coach, I’ve seen time and again how nature affects our nervous systems.

When we step outside and truly notice, not just walk through but actually notice, the body shifts. The heart rate slows. Cortisol drops. Breath deepens.

We move out of fight-or-flight and into what’s known as “rest and digest.” This is a state where healing, connection, and creativity happen.

That’s why I love small, consistent practices that help people engage with nature in everyday ways. You don’t need to take a hike or sit for an hour under a tree. Just stepping outside for 30 seconds with awareness can be a reset.

The June Simple Joys challenge builds on that. It turns noticing into a nourishing daily rhythm.

Why Daily Practices Help Us Stay Connected

One of the hardest things about slowing down is remembering to do it.

I’m someone who thrives with structure, but I also resist rigidity. This printable was designed to live right in the sweet spot. It is supportive without pressure, grounding without being “one more thing.”

Having a visual tracker, something you see every day on the fridge or near your desk, helps make the habit stick. And because it only takes a moment or two, it’s accessible even on the busiest days.

There’s something so satisfying about checking off a box. Especially when that box represents a moment of care, calm, and connection.

What’s Included in the Free Printable

The June Simple Joys in Nature printable includes:

  • 30 daily prompts that invite you to slow down and engage your senses
  • A calming, nature-rooted design that’s ink-friendly and easy to hang
  • A short set of instructions to guide your practice
  • Space to check off each day and reflect with one or two words

Examples of prompts include:

  • Today smelled like…
  • A tiny joy I almost missed…
  • The light today reminded me of…
  • Something soft I touched in nature…

These prompts are intentionally short, open-ended, and sensory-based. You don’t need to overthink. Just let the moment meet you.

How to Use It (Even If You Miss a Day)

There’s no “wrong” way to use this challenge.

You can:

  • Keep it near your journal or bed
  • Pin it to your fridge or clipboard
  • Snap a photo and use it as a gentle reminder
  • Skip days and come back later. This is your practice.

Each prompt is designed to take 2 minutes or less. Just read it, step outside or look out the window, and respond. If you want to write more, you can. If not, one word is more than enough.

And if you’re supporting kids, clients, or a community group, this is also a beautiful tool to share with others.

The Science of Noticing Joy

There’s a reason gratitude and noticing practices are so widely recommended by therapists, mindfulness teachers, and nervous system educators. They work.

When we consciously look for beauty or goodness, especially in nature, we’re rewiring our brains toward more presence, resilience, and emotional balance.

One 2006 study found that people who practiced daily gratitude for just three weeks experienced increased happiness, better sleep, and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Now add nature into the mix, and the benefits multiply. Spending even short amounts of time in green spaces has been linked to:

  • Lower stress and blood pressure
  • Improved mood and attention span
  • Greater sense of awe and connection
  • Increased overall wellbeing

This isn’t just “nice.” It’s powerful.
