Because what they need most isn’t more stuff — it’s space to rest, breathe, and feel appreciated.
Teachers hold so much.
And while personalized tumblers, scented candles, and gift cards are sweet, what many teachers truly crave by this time of year is rest.
Time in nature. A sense of exhale.
It’s a conversation I’ve had with more than a few parents (and fellow teacher-appreciation gift givers): What do you give to the person who’s been wrangling chaos, cultivating young minds, and showing up with heart and resilience day after day? And what if you need to find something meaningful without breaking the bank?
This year, I found myself facing that exact question.
My son attends a school that focuses a lot on outdoor education, so I knew I wanted to keep the gifts nature-themed. But with multiple teachers to honor, I needed something thoughtful and budget-friendly. That’s where the REI gift card idea came in—a small gift card per teacher, paired with a (random but useful) outdoor-themed item like a carabiner, Rechargeable Micro Lantern, or Frisbee and topped off with a punny, heartfelt note like…
- “You’ve helped me climb to new heights!”
- “Thanks for lighting the way for me this year!”
- “Thanks for throwing wisdom my way!”
It wasn’t about giving them something big or expensive—it was about getting them to a place that sparks outdoor adventure. A little nudge toward the trailhead, the campsite, or simply a breath of fresh air.
The gifts were fun and cheeky, but also carried a deeper message: go outside. Rest. Play. Take time for yourself.
Because at the end of the day, that’s what most teachers really need.
I picked out the items, but let my son take the lead on deciding which gift went to which teacher—and, of course, he got to flex his 12-year-old sense of humor by coming up with the gratitude puns (because what tween doesn’t love a good pun?). He typed everything up in Canva, added a little graphic to each one, and we printed and taped the tags to the gift cards and items. He loved the process—especially choosing just the right combo for each teacher and putting his own personal touch on every single one.
Why Nature-Based Gifts Work
More than just clever puns and reusable gear, nature-based gifts are a reminder of what’s accessible to all of us: the healing, regulating, restoring power of the natural world.
Time outside isn’t just relaxing—it’s backed by science:
🌱 Reduces stress and supports nervous system regulation
🌿 Encourages parasympathetic activation (aka rest-and-digest)
🧠 Inspires creative thinking and cognitive clarity
💡 Increases alpha brainwaves, helping us access a more open, reflective state
And let’s be honest—after a year of managing classroom dynamics, navigating learning plans, and pouring out care to 20+ students… most teachers are not walking into summer rested.
They’re walking in wiped out.
That’s why these gift ideas are all about offering something restorative.
Not more to do. Not another mug. But something that says: I see you. And I hope you take care of yourself, too.
7 Nature-Inspired Teacher Gift Ideas

1. 🪴 A Beautiful (Low-Maintenance) Houseplant

“Thank you for helping me grow.”
2. 📚 A Nature-Themed Journal + Pen
Pair a soft-cover journal with a natural fiber pen or pencil. Add a note inviting them to write outside or bring it on summer hikes. Bonus: include a few of your printable “May Moments of Presence” inside!
3. 🫖 An Herbal Tea Sampler
Choose blends with calming herbs like chamomile, lemon balm, or tulsi — perfect for sipping while looking out the window (or decompressing after a long day).
4. 🧘♀️ A Pocket-Sized Mindfulness or Nature Deck
There are some lovely card decks out there with seasonal prompts, nature-based reflections, or grounding practices. If you’re crafty, you could even make a mini “calm kit” yourself!
5. 🧺 A Nature-Inspired Picnic or Snack Basket
Think: trail mix, dried fruit, herbal tea sachets, local honey, beeswax wraps. Package it up in a reusable basket or tote with a note that says:
“Here’s to slower summer days.”
